There was no chance for me anymore to buy a ticket to the performance of Bach's Weihnachtsoratorium (Christmas Oratorio) in the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig/Germany where Bach worked as music director from 1723 until 1750 and composed more than 150 cantatas, one new one every week. But how lucky I was:

During the holiday season you can find Christmas stars everywhere: on the Christmas tree, Christmas markets, in the windows of houses. The star represents the star of Bethlehem. In secular carols the star stands for the light shining bright in dark times, bringing hope to the people. Today I want to share with you a very beautiful Christmas carol which is loved especially in the East of Germany: 1000 Sterne sind ein Dom (A thousand stars). It is performed by one of Germany's famous youth choirs, the Rundfunk-Jugendchor Wernigerode. Enjoy! Glühwein (Glow wine) is a very popular holiday tradition. It can be alcoholic or non- alcoholic and contains various mulling spices. You can buy it on Christmas markets when you feel really cold or you prepare it at home to enjoy it while listening to music or relaxing in front of a fire place.
There are hundreds of beautiful Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) or Christkindlmarkets (Christkindlmärkte) in Germany during the weeks of Advent.
This is one of my favorite one's in Dresden/Germany: Today is Nikolaustag. (St. Nicholas' day). I was very lucky to find some sweet treats in my shoes this morning. St. Nicholaus was especially kind to me. I received gifts, although I forgot to shine my shoes like I did when I was a child.
German children (and some adults too) love to sing There are countless high quality concerts in Dresden/ Saxony in the holiday season. It is hard to decide where to go.
Every week from Monday to Friday there is the Striezelmarktmusik (Striezelmarket music) which takes place in the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) right beside the Striezelmarket (one of Dresden's Christmas Markets). I refuse to weigh myself at this time of the year, but try to increase my exercise. There are so many delicious holiday treats offered by friends and family and on Christmas markets.
Germans like to send Season Greetings or Christmas cards to family members, friends and business partners.
Some cards relate to the Christmas story, some show Christmas symbols, Santa Claus, snow -covered landscapes or nostalgic scenes of the past. |
