As we enter spring, we look toward Easter! Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is held on the Sunday immediately following the first full moon of the vernal equinox. That’s why Easter is earlier some years and later in other years.
With over 60% of Germans being Christian, Easter is a huge holiday in Germany [1]. It’s such an important event that Friday to Monday of Easter weekend is a national holiday. (Four day weekend? Sign me up!)

Lots of music has been written over the centuries about the Nativity.
The Weihnachtshistorie SWV 435 (The Christmas Story), written by German composer Heinrich Schütz was first performed 1660 in Dresden/Germany. It tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. You can find the free score to follow along here. For lyrics and translations into English click here. Peter Cornelius, a German composer, poet and writer composed beautiful Weihnachtslieder (Christmas songs). He lived 1824 -1874 and during his life he met the Brothers Grimm, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Eichendorff and many other prominent figures.
