Another delicious German Holiday treat is the Lebkuchen or Pfefferkuchen (gingerbread).
There are two cities in Germany which are most famous where these treats are made: Pulsnitz and Nürnberg.

Peter Cornelius, a German composer, poet and writer composed beautiful Weihnachtslieder (Christmas songs). He lived 1824 -1874 and during his life he met the Brothers Grimm, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Eichendorff and many other prominent figures.
We can't imagine the holiday season without a Weihnachtsbaum (Christmas tree). In former times the tree was decorated with nuts, apples and other fruits. Only in the 18th century people started to use candles and later electric lights to illuminate the tree and to hang many different kinds of ornaments on it.
Traditionally every year the ZDF will broadcast the popular Advent concert of the Dresden Staatskapelle in the rebuilt Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) in Dresden.
A great chance to enjoy beautiful music together with impressions from the interior of this unique church. Today I want to share with you the pictures I took during my visit in Leipzig. Leipzig is a very attractive city for culture and music lovers. Over 500 composers lived here, many poets and painters as well. Leipzig has been a trade city since at least the Holy Roman Empire. The opera house, Nikolaikirche, Thomaskirche, Musikalische Komödie and the Gewandhaus with it's orchestra are some highlights of the city.
Christmas cookies can't be missed. They can come in many different styles. Try some, here is one recipe! Let us know how they turned out.
I have been very moved, impressed and grateful to visit the Mendelssohn museum in Leipzig/Germany, the sole surviving residence of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his last.
We read biographies of musicians to learn about their lives or watch a documentary. But to visit the places they have really lived in is very different. The story comes alive, you begin to feel the spirit of a genius. People have always loved coffee. And during my stay in Leipzig I visited Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum(yes, just one e in coffee), one of the oldest European coffee houses, where coffee has been served since 1711.
Robert Schumann came here regularly between 1828 and 1844. |
