The countdown is running. The preparation for the Festtage (Holidays) needs to be finished soon. Grocery shopping is done. Germans celebrate Christmas already at December 24th, the Christmas eve. In my family it is tradition to eat German potato salad and sausage in the evening after returning from the church service. There are different theories why Germans eat potato salad on the holiest days of the year: Some choose this simple meal in memory of the poverty of Maria and Joseph and the birth of Jesus in a stable. Others keep a tradition that people practiced until the beginning of the 20th century: the Nativity Fast that started on St. Martin's day and ended December 25th.
