growing up, studying and singing in Germany, I developed a fascination for the close relationship between language and music. Language is music, it has melody and rhythm. Great composers like Mozart cared for that setting language into music.
When I came to America I realized how many of my singing colleagues struggle with the German language.
I could feel their frustration dealing with so many consonants in a row that easily close the throat, and with vowels too open or too close such that the words are difficult to understand. Sometimes I heard beautiful voices singing empty words without any meaning or emotion in it.
The German language is a very beautiful one and it is GVAI’s mission to help singers to explore it and to love singing in it. Great music was written in German: Mozart’s magic flute is only one of them. Only when we own every word can we create meaning and emotion, and only then can we touch our audience.
Let me know what you want to learn about, what you struggle with or share your story about singing in German.
