This is a very short blog post today, but I wanted to share with you a transforming experience I had over Easter. I have been hiking at Cougar Mountain in the Pacific Northwest. It is such a beautiful place to be. My husband and I did not find immediately the trail we wanted to hike and ended up on Bear Bridge Trail. We were amazed by the green moss everywhere, several hundred- year- old trees, and early blooming spring flowers. I love to stop during hikes to look around to catch every bit of the beauty surrounding me. I stood there on a plateau looking down the hill into the valley, listening to the murmuring creek and the birds singing. It was a bit windy, too and suddenly my voice started to sing. It just came out of me very naturally. Nobody else was there, so I just let it happen. It felt so good, was very soothing like a meditation. Suddenly, I felt a oneness with nature, peace and strength. The sounds melted in each other and my husband, who arrived at the plateau, joined in. What a wonderful experience we had. We work as singers so hard on cultivating our voices. But in this moment, nothing mattered. The voice just flew out of me, it sounded beautiful, easy, natural, the notes were all there without warming up or technical thoughts involved. I realized, that it is all there. At a certain point, we just need to let it happen, getting out of our own way. The nature helps. Try it. I am sure, it will free you, too. Your voice starts to sing out of the impulse to praise the beauty of the nature. Did you also have an experience like this? Please share it with us in the comments below.

Have you been successful with this year's summer program applications? Not really? Why not?
You invested time and efforts in new recordings, updated your CV, your headshot looks neat. So what is the problem? Too much competition, you might think. And yes, this is oftentimes true. Hmm. But there might be another missing puzzle. Imagine you are a flight attendant on a flight from Seattle to Frankfurt, Germany and one of your passengers looks like this. What comes to your mind? Does she have a serious lung condition or a heart problem? Is it dangerous? Does she need special care on this long flight?
People's minds can play tricky games. When I am flying wearing my HumidiFlyer face mask, I usually get looks full of concern. I tell the stewards not to worry, I am perfectly healthy and not on my way to a hospital, but to sing concerts on the other side of the Atlantic. Is it a disease to be a classical singer? I smile and I have to admit, it looks a bit scary. But I am perfectly fine and more than grateful to use this special face mask in planes where vocal folds dry out easily. It is the beginning of a new year and people love to set a New year's resolution which they usually break shortly after.
Why is that? It is hard to reach a goal if we do not put it in our daily schedule and if we do not break it down into small steps. This is easy, we just need to do it. Let's get started. NOW! End THIS year by looking back, celebrating your achievements and everything you are proud of!
Make a list of your accomplishments and brainstorm together with a friend who knows you well and who can help out, if you get stuck. |
