Q&A with Christine

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I have always loved singing and teaching and there was no question for me that I would pursue this as my career.
It is such a pleasure for me to help my students to reach their goals and develop their voices. Some want to increase their range or learn breath support. Some want to prepare for auditions or competitions, or to sing in choirs.  And some come for diction work. My students tell me that I am good at breaking down the technique of singing to the skill level of each singer, beginner or professional, and changing the exercises according to the challenges or progress they might have.
Yes, I like that. It is fun for me to see how I can help the singer to sound best and feel good about it. And my students love my performance training work--which helps them to become confident in singing and in life in general. There are many simple tools, which we employ to great effect.

When I started singing I was a very shy person and I had a lot of stage fright. But the love for singing was so big that I kept on working and improving. And it paid off. Now I enjoy being on stage, to portray a character and to interact with colleagues in order to tell an exciting story and make the audience laugh, cry and enjoy themselves. When I teach my students, they benefit a lot from these experiences and from my curiosity about the voice in general. It is fun to work on the development of the voice, to increase the range, make the breath sustainable and to interpret a certain song in many different ways. I love to teach students of different ages and levels. I love to teach repertoire in different languages and it makes me feel very happy to see the progress and the development of the student. Singing is life for me.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When we meet for the introductory lesson, I usually ask the singer about her or his motivation to sing and what she or he wants to achieve. I like to learn about former musical experiences. I target the lesson to the singer's wishes and to what would benefit the development of their voice. We will do vocal exercises and either sing a song the student already knows or decide what repertoire we will sing in future lessons. During the exercises I examine the voice and give feedback about the skill level of the singer. My goal is to give the student an idea of how our work will proceed and what I think we can do to improve the voice. It is important for me that the singer feels a success at the end of the lesson and knows what she or he might want to work on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Double Master's degree in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy at the Dresden Conservatory of Music in Germany. I also have a Master’s degree in Music Education (Staatsexamen) at the Dresden Conservatory of Music in Germany.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with a wide range of students from beginners to young professionals, ages 8 – 80.

Testimonials about my work:

"I've been taking voice lessons with Christine for a few months now, and it's been an amazing experience. I'm a beginner, but Christine knows perfectly well how to teach beginners. We've already seen noticeable improvement in my voice. Christine's been helping me develop vocal technique. She is an outstanding teacher - she immediately notices my mistakes, no matter how subtle, and corrects me.  She also shows me many tricks (both physical and psychological) that I can use to make my voice do the right thing. And she has a variety of exercises that help with different aspects of developing your voice. Finally, she's a great person to work with - very cool-minded, always smiling/laughing/joking, and has the rare and wonderful ability to point out mistakes without making you feel bad. She is also a very good listener - always willing to answer my questions/comments. Christine is a fun and interesting person. I think everybody can benefit from voice lessons, even if you think you're no good at singing. And I think Christine is perfect for the job. I highly recommend her!"   Akshay Kulkarni, Redmond
"I started voice lessons with Christine after several years musical training (violin, choir and orchestra), but without prior knowledge how to use my voice properly. During choir rehearsals I tensed up quickly, got hoarse and high notes were difficult to achieve. Christine is a very empathic person and she could realize immediately, how my singing could be improved! I loved how she chose her way of explaining and the selection of exercises to my level of expertise and my personality.
Working with her was lots of fun! Christine is an always cheerful, friendly and patient person. I was not used sing alone in front of somebody, but Christine could lure me with her natural way out of my initial shyness!
I appreciate Christine’s creative teaching style and her patience a lot. Through her clear and vivid explanations I could always sing the exercises very well. If I did not understand something, she found another way to describe it, sang by herself that I could listen, showed me pictures of the vocal tract and helped me to feel the involved muscles by myself.
Christine’s teaching and her love for singing was always very motivating. Soon I could see major improvements! I had created a good basis for healthy and fulfilling singing!"
