Jinhsil Yi

Picture
Jinshil Yi is an avid collaborative pianist in high demand throughout the Tacoma-Seattle area. She has appeared in numerous voice recitals and concerts throughout the Puget Sound area, for both soloists and ensembles. Praised for her “expressive, lyrical playing” and “exquisite sound,” Jinshil has delighted audiences of all ages and backgrounds with her piano performances throughout the years. Her passion for chamber music led her to actively pursue collaborative piano both during and after college. Her piano trio, Trio Consonare, was invited on a full-tuition basis for two years to perform and participate in the Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Seminar and Festivals hosted by the Alexander String Quartet in San Francisco, CA.

In 2016, she was invited to serve as staff accompanist (with emphasis on voice) at the University of Puget Sound, also working extensively with the acclaimed Adelphian Concert Choir, Dorians, and Chorale, touring both the US and Canada with the Adelphians. In April and November 2017, Jinshil appeared on the Second City Chamber Music concert series in art song spotlight recitals with soprano Christina Kowalski and baritone Ryan Bede. This year, Jinshil was featured as pianist for the “Got Opera?” Jacobsen concert at the University of Puget Sound, a faculty performance of favorite opera highlights. In June 2018, Jinshil presented an all-Bernstein recital with tenor and professional cantor Geoffrey Fine, “Vocal music with a Jewish resonance,” as part of the birth centennial celebration of Leonard Bernstein. Both Jinshil’s solo and collaborative playing have been broadcast on the radio, most recently on 98.1 King FM’s Northwest Focus Live following a concert tour of western Washington.
A heartfelt sacred music enthusiast, Jinshil loves expressing her faith through her long-time work as pianist and organist for two churches in Lakewood, Washington. In addition to serving as a staff pianist for Tacoma Youth Chorus and Charles Wright Academy, Jinshil regularly partners with numerous other schools, churches, choirs, and private music studios for music festivals, concerts, competitions, and solo recitals. She particularly enjoys coaching both vocal and instrumental students at the high school and collegiate level, helping them take the music to the next level. Jinshil serves as Managing Director for Second City Chamber Series and is a soprano in the Symphony Tacoma Voices.
An eager and dedicated life-long scholar, Jinshil holds three degrees cum laude from the University of Puget Sound in Music, Biochemistry, and Politics and Government. Jinshil especially cherishes her personal connection to Germany (born in Stuttgart, lived in Bad Kreuznach from 1997-2000, attended German elementary school) and has always regarded it with affection as her second home and dream place to live and work. In 2015, she presented an academic paper comparing Brahms and Ives art song of a German text by poet Hermann Allmers at a regional American Musicological Society Meeting (“ ‘Feldeinsamkeit’: Beyond Emulation, the Challenge to Equal or Surpass”). Her wide-ranging academic interests and endeavors have caused her to be elected to the All-Washington Academic Team and academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa. She is currently engaged in a research project for a narrated concert to honor musicians whose musical work was influenced or affected by their resistance to the rise of fascism in early and mid-20th century Europe.
